River Tours for the Arthur and Hellyer River areas

Huskisson River <find ich auf Landkarte nicht>
Que River to Huskisson River Bridge

Distance: 23Km
Average Gradient: 4m/Km
Difficulty: Grade 2-3 <zu schwer für uns>
Paddling Time: 5-6 hrs
Entry Point: At the Que River. Take the Huskisson Road from the Murchison Highway at the Hatfield River. (Grid ref. 882 017). Sheet). Drive for about 21 Km. to the Hatfield River, then another 5 Km. to the Que River.
Exit Point: The Huskisson River Bridge on the Lower Pieman Road. (Grid ref. 703 785). Water Level: There is a gauge at the Huskisson River Bridge on the Lower Pieman Road (as above). Minimum of 1.0m. any lower and the river is too rocky.
Tasmap: 1:100 000 Pieman, Sophia (Land Tenure Index Series).

General Description: The river flows through some beautiful forest and small limestone cliffs. There are numerous campsites beside the river if an overnight trip is desired. Walkouts become difficult after the first 10 Km. as the river moves away from the forestry roads. The river is generally easy paddling but care should be taken to avoid a difficult walkout.

Wilson River <zwar zu kurz, aber wir müssen nachfragen, ob man den gesamten Pieman Lake nicht weiterpaddeln kann>
Lower Pieman Road to Cableway

Distance: 8 Km.
Average Gradient: 4m/Km.
Difficulty: Grade 1-2. Paddling Time: 3-4 hours. <zu kurz>
Entry Point: At the bridge over the Wilson River on the Lower Pieman Road. <20 km w Tullah/Roseberry>
Exit Point: At the aerial cableway over the Pieman River (Grid ref. 645 763). Access to this is gained via a gravel road turning off the Murchison Highway 2 Km. on the Zeehan side of Renison Bell.
Water Level: Minimum of 0.8m.
Tasmap: 1:100 000 Pieman (Land Tenure Index Series).

General Description: An easy trip through beautiful forests with Huon Pine overhanging the river. Any walkout should be from the right bank.

Leigh/Lindsay/Frankland River
Spur 10 to Frankland River Bridge

Distance: 18 Km.
Average Gradient: 5m/Km.
Difficulty: Grade 2-3. <zu schwer>
Paddling Time: 4-5 hours.
Entry Point: From Sumac Road (off Roger River Road C218) take the Forestry Road marked "Spur 10" (Grid ref. CQ 366 263). About 5 Km. down this road take a road, "Spur 10-1" to a point approximately Grid ref. CQ 314 275. Walk down to the river to the right of the road.
Exit Point: The Frankland River Bridge (Grid ref. CQ 217 384).
Water Level: Heavy rain needed. The Horton River could be a good guide.
Tasmap: 1:100 000 Arthur River, Nelson Bay (Land Tenure Index Series).

General Description: The Leigh River is used as access to the Lindsay. If forestry work continues in the area south of the Leigh, then direct access to the Lindsay should be easy. The Leigh is quite small, has a number of logs across the river and is mainly small grade 2. About 2 Km. down on a tight left hand corner is a 3m. drop called "Wack's Waterfall". This waterfall stretches the width of the river at an angle. It can be portaged by paddling along the top to the left hand side and scouting through the bush a short distance. Start again just below the falls and take the right channel at the island below. The remainder of the trip is grade 2 with small drops. Beware of logs as there are many across both the Lindsay and Leigh. The Frankland is grade 23 to Balfour then flat to the finish.

Horton River
Horton Loop Road to Sumac Road Bridge

Distance: 12 Km.
Average Gradient: 5m/Km.
Difficulty: Unknown. <zu schwer> Paddling Time: Unknown.
Entry Point: From the Sumac Road, take the Horton Loop Road to the Horton Bridge (Grid ref. 404 246).
Exit Point: Sumac Road Bridge over the Horton (Grid ref. 345 324).
Water Level: A low level would be advisable for a first trip. A canoeist should be able to paddle under the bridge at the finish.
Tasmap: 1:100 000 Arthur River (Land Tenure Index Series).

General Description: To the best of our knowledge, this section of river has not been canoed. Descriptions of other rivers in the area suggest that it could be a good trip. Allow plentv of time for a first descent. Beware of logs. Caution as river can rise fast, high, without warning. This includes cars left at start and finish.

Horton/Frankland River
Sumac Road Bridge to Balfour

Distance: 7 Km. on Horton and 13 Km. on Frankland.
Average Gradient: 10m/Km. on Horton and 2m/Km. on Frankland. Peak Gradient: 20m/Km. for a very short section.
Difficulty: Grade 4-5. <zu schwer>
Paddling Time: 4-5 hours.
Entry Points: Sumac Road Bridge on the Horton River (Grid ref. 345 324).
Exit Point: Balfour (four-wheel drive needed).
Water Level: The ideal level seems to be that which allows the canoeist to just pass under the bridge at the start.
Tasmap: 1:100 000 Arthur River, Nelson Bay (Land Tenure Index Series).

General Description: The first 4-5 Km. are reasonably flat but very fast with a few grade 2 rapids. The start of the difficult section is marked by a lm. drop. Shortly after, there is a section of grade 5 where the river drops away steeply over a series of large tight falls. Portage is easy, along the very top of the rapid, along the right bank. 800m. after this is another 3m. drop called "Witty Falls". It can be paddled on the right channel close to the island in the middle of the river or portaged over the island. The remainder of the trip is grade 2-3 until Balfour. From here down it is flat with a few small grade 2 rapids. If a four-wheel drive vehicle is available, Balfour would be a better exit point. It is marked by several steel cables across the river about 4 Km. after the Lindsay River joins.

Frankland/Arthur River
Frankland River Bridge to Temma

Distance: 19 Km. + 11 Km. on the Arthur.
Average Gradient: 4m/Km. on the Frankland.
Difficulty: Grade 2-3. <zu schwer>
Paddling Time: 4-5 hours.
Entry Point: From the Frankland River Bridge on the unnamed road that leads off Sumac Road (Grid ref. CQ 218 384) (C218).
Exit Point: The Arthur River Bridge at Temma (Grid ref. CQ 038 528).
Water Level: No gauge is available, but heavy winter rain for 2-3 days would be necessary to raise the level sufficiently.
Tasmap: 1:100 000 Nelson Bay (Land Tenure Index Series).

General Description: The river is very narrow with a lot of small steep drops. The river may be grade 3 at a very high water level. The last 10 Km. on the Arthur are flat.

Rapid River
Mt. Bertha Road to Rapid River Road Bridge

Distance: 10 Km.
Average Gradient: 10m/Km. Peak Gradient: 10m/ Km.
Difficulty: Grade 2-3. <zu schwer>
Paddling Time: 2l/2-3 hours (plus 1-2 hours walk in).
Entry Point: From Mt. Bertha Road (off C218), take the Forestry Road to a point (Grid ref. CQ 459 385). Walk to the top of the spur and veer to the right. Follow the creek down to a point (Grid ref. 462 387) on the Rapld River.
Exit Point: The Rapid River Road Bridge (Grid ref. 405 420).
Water Level: No gauge available. All the rocks at the Rapld Kiver Road Bridge must be covered or the river is too rocky.
Tasmap: 1:100 000 Arthur River (Land Tenure Index Series).

General Description: The walk into the river can be quite difficult as the vegetation is thick. Once on the river, the first 5-6 Km. are quite flat with a few small drops. After this there are four or five larger drops (1-2m.). Several of these could be tricky with higher water levels as there would be larger stoppers.

Arthur River  <Text nach unten verschoben, wo er in besserem Zusammenhang steht>
Farquhars Bridge to Arthur River Bridge

Hellyer River
Chilton Bridge to Shooter's Hill <noch alles vor Hellyer Gorge, also zu schwer>

Distance: 7 Km.
Average Gradient: 14m/Km. Peak Gradient: 20m/ Km. over the last 2 Km.
Difficulty: Grade 3. <zu schwer>
Paddling Time: 3 hours.
Entry Point: Chilton Bridge. Take the Guildford Road (C191) from the Fingerpost turnoff on the Murchison Highway (A10) to the Hellyer River (Grid ref. 890 139).
Exit Point: About 100m. below the Wey River (Grid ref. 880 199). Take the forestry road (Goderich Road); there may not be a bridge at the finish so mark or note the finish point yourself. Water Level: Several days rain needed.
Tasmap: 1:100 000 Inglis (Land Tenure Index Series).

General Description: The river drops very steeply with a series of vertical falls. There are a number of very tricky sections and at high water, these could be very difficult.

Hellyer Upper Section River
Hampshire Link Road to Hellyer Gorge

Distance: 16 Km.
Average Gradient: 16m Km. Peak Gradient: 20m/ Km. for the first 6 Km.
Difficulty: Grade 3 .plus <zu schwer>

Paddling Time: 3-4 hours.
Entry Point: From the bridge over the Hellyer River on the Hampshire to Murchison Highway Link Rd.
Exit Point: At the Murchison Highway Bridge in the Hellyer Gorge (Grid ref. CQ 837 298).
Water Level: The gauge is at the Murchison Highway Bridge in Hellyer Gorge. Minimum level is lm. After 1.5m. the trip becomes dangerous.
Tasmap: 1:100 000 Inglis (Land Tenure Index Series).

General Description: This section of river runs through very steep country and it drops continuously with many good grade 3 rapids. The rapids are very close together and log jams are always a danger. There are a number of small waterfalls in the first 5km several of which usually need portaging as they contain logs. Inspection is necessary as a walk out is horrendous. The river can be very cold and an early start is recommended. The last 5 km are grade 2.

Hellyer River <ist auch beschrieben unter River Tours in Tasmania (kommentierte Version)>
Hellyer Gorge to Blackwell Road Bridge

Distance: 13 Km.
Average Gradient: 6m/Km.

Water Level: Minimum 0.9m. Tasmap: 1:100 000 Inglis (Land Tenure Index Series).

General Description: The river consists of small drops and easy grade 2 rapids. It flows through some beautiful rainforest.

Hellyer/Arthur River  <ist auch beschrieben unter River Tours in Tasmania (kommentierte Version)>
Blackwell Road Bridge to Farquhars Bridge

Distance: 15 Km.
Average Gradient: 4m/Km.
Difficulty: Grade 3-4. Paddling Time: 2-3 hours.
Entry Point: The Blackwell Road Bridge over the Hellyer River (Grid ref. 789 349).
Exit Point: Farquhars Bridge. Turn right at Henrietta onto Takone Road (C236) then on Farquhars Bridge until the road crosses the Arthur (Grid ref. 703 400)
Water Level: Minimum lm. at Hellyer Gorge.
Tasmap: 1:100 000 Inglis, Arthur River (Land Tenurelndex Series).

General Description: The only real problem on this section is a grade 4. This is toward the end of the section. It can be easily portaged on the left. The rest of the river is grade 2-3 water. If camping beside the Arthur, drink the water from the side creeks as the Arthur is polluted.<!!!>

Arthur River  <guter Kandidat>  <ist auch beschrieben unter River Tours in Tasmania (kommentierte Version)>
Farquhars Bridge to Arthur River Bridge

Distance: 128 Km.
Difficulty: Grade 2.
Paddling Time: 4 days.
Entry Point: Farquhars Bridge via Takone West (C236), (Grid ref. CQ 703 400).
Exit Point: Arthur River township at the river mouth. Follow the Arthur River Road north for 15 Km. to intersect Bass Highway (A2) near Marrawah.
Water Level: Several days rain needed<pfui>. Tasmap: 1:100 000 Arthur River (Land Tenure Index Series).

General Description: This river is suitable for relative novices with at least one experienced party member<supa>. It has a good deal of flat water and regular rapids up to grade 3. 30 km. after the Trowutta Bridge, the river enters a 10 Km. gorge with numerous small rapids. The Arthur River Bridge at the coast follows a tiresome 14 Km. estuary. Campsites are plentiful and this trip could be included with Hellyer sections for a week long camping trip. The river can rise very high quickly. Well equipped parties should have no trouble completing the trip without mishap. There are a number of exit points at bridges if shorter trips are desired.
